I spent quite a bit of time with Les Chimères during my 2008 visit to the Gustave Moreau museum. It’s a fascinating piece and it’s almost impossible to imagine what it would have looked like had he ever finished it. Certainly it would have been more overwhelming than Jupiter et Sémélé.
I’ve always been a bit ambivalent about Symbolist art because women are usually cast as primordial, demonic figures, but Moreau’s depictions of women always struck me as more about reverence than vilification.
I have a few detail shots, but these ladies get to be first in honor of this finally being a jewelry making day for me.
